“Oi, Kaidoh. Long time no see.”
Kaidoh’s chest was heaving. He’d just beaten yet another person who had challenged him, which happened often at the street courts. He didn’t lose often, either. So when he looked up to see who called on him, he was a bit surprised, but only because once he beat someone, they usually weren’t stupid enough to challenge him again.
But here was Kamio. He looked the same as the day he’d lost his match for Fudoumine to Kaidoh. He had his mp3 player attached to a pocket, playing some high, absurdly fast paced music that Kaidoh could just barely hear emanating from the tiny ear buds lodged in his ears. That snarky grin of Kamio’s was also in place, which automatically nudged the corners of Kaidoh’s lips down a few degrees, securely setting his mouth in a frown. The clothes were different, but the music obsessed boy’s attitude was the same, which just pissed Kaidoh off.
“What do you want?”
“A rematch, of course.”
Kaidoh didn’t even know how Kamio could hear his words through the loud music he had cranked in his ears. It was just another thing that annoyed him about the other boy. His actions unsettled Kaidoh, although he wasn’t quite sure why.
Kaidoh dragged in another ragged breath before forcing himself to his feet. He was tired, but he couldn’t stand the sight of that smirk and the sound of that awful music. The quickest way to get the other away from him would be to place the tennis net and court between them. Before he could stand up completely though, Kamio’s eyes widened and he placed a firm hand on Kaidoh’s chest, pushing him back down onto the bench.
“Sheesh Kaidoh, you can say if you’re tired. It’s no accomplishment if I wipe the floor with you when you’re in this state.”
Kaidoh glared, slouching a bit. He really was exhausted. Kamio sat down next to him. After a moment, Kaidoh started abruptly. He glared at the other boy, who had just plugged one of his ear buds into Kaidoh’s own ear. Kaidoh felt like he had stuck his finger into an electric socket. What the hell was this? He let his eyes slid shut, and adjusted the ear bud.
“Your music is terrible.”
“It’s all about the beat!”
“What beat?”
Kamio just laughed, and snatched his headphone back.
“I just thought it’d help you relax, since you’re practically falling asleep here, but I see you can’t appreciate real music.” Before Kaidoh could ridicule his beloved music even more, he forged on quickly-- “Meet me here tomorrow. And please-- try to not beat ten people before me. I’ll just take that as a forfeit on your behalf if you do. Don’t think it’ll be so easy this time-- I’ve gotten a lot better.” Kamio smirked once again while standing up, but Kaidoh didn’t feel so annoyed at it this time.
Kaidoh gazed at Kamio’s back as he walked away, finally not having to gasp for breath anymore. He stood up, grabbing his tennis bag before heading to the opposite exit of the court to head home.
He bet Kamio had gotten a lot better, but he had also.
A lot of people weren’t stupid enough to challenge him twice, but he found himself respecting Kamio for approaching him... even if he was definitely going to wipe the tennis courts with him tomorrow.
